Living in cities with lots of pollution and that rely mostly on air-conditioning for cold and warm in the house, it is important that you keep your filters clean. This regular cleaning will not only improve the air quality of your home, but also help improve the efficiency of your air conditioner and keep it in good shape for longer.
Scheduling periodic cleaning is essential to ensure a healthier home as the filters accumulate not only dirt but also pathogens and allergens.
Since most of us have maids that help at home, a good cleaning is recommended at least twice a month and should involve more than just running the filters under water. Thse are the steps to maintain a healthy living house.
Step 1 – Open the air conditioner and remove filters
Turn off the main air conditioner and remove the filters. Check carefully their position so you can re-install them easily. If you spot any rips you are better off replacing the filters.
Step 2 – Vacuum or beat them gently outside
Get rid off all accumulated dirt and grime, wear a mask if you are doing this indoor..
Step 3 – Wash and sanitize the filters
Fill a basin, bucket or your bath with equal portions of water and vinegar (to kill harmful bacteria and allergens that may have accumulated in the filter), you can find cheap bottles at local stores. The filters should be able to totally submerge when placed inside.
Step 4 – Soak
If you have not cleaned the filters recently, leave them for about 4 hours to get properly sanitized or soak for 1 hour if you regularly clean them. In this time, your AC should stay off.
Step 5 – Drain (no rinse) and dry
Remove the filters from the cleaning solution and allow the mixture to drain off. Do not rinse the filters as to do so will reverse the effects of the sanitizing process. I usually leave them inside the bath or in the sun on the balcony.
Step 6 – Re-intall the filters
Fit back the filters into the air conditioner and enjoy your cleaner air.
