What Food Should You Get Organic

Today we wanted to talk about organic foods.

Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods. Organic produce contains fewer or no pesticides, which is extremely good for long term health.

However, unfortunately organic produce can be more expensive than their normal counterpart, and we often get overwhelmed by it and let it go all together.
But is it necessary to purchase everything organic?

The good news is that if you are on a budget the best way is to start with the products that are the most contaminated, those with thin skin and that absorb a lot of water. According to the 2018 EWG’s Dirty Dozen List, the below should be bought organic:

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Nectarines
  4. Apples
  5. Peaches
  6. Pears
  7. Cherries
  8. Grapes
  9. Celery
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Sweet Bell Peppers
  12. Potatoes
  13. We also recommend all other leafy greens, like salads

Then work your way up and add more organic items to the list, keeping in mind that the following ones are the least contaminated: Avocados, Sweet Corn (avoid GMO though!), Pineapples, Cabbage, Onions, Frozen Sweet Peas, Papayas (avoid GMO), Asparagus, Mangos, Eggplant, Honeydew, Kiwi, Cantaloupe, Cauliflower, and Broccoli.
